As you know Christmas is the biggest holiday of the year. The amount of money that’s spent during Christmas is truly staggering. In recent years people have taken to paying somebody to install their Christmas lights because they simply don’t have the time or they don’t want to do it.

In the past 6 years the holiday lighting industry has grown over 800%… which equates to roughly 200 million dollars annually. This figure keeps growing and growing and you can be a part of it.

It’s quite easy to earn money installing Christmas lights. The season is very short as you start around November 1st and finish sometime around January 15th. I personally didn’t think I could make this work, but now I only work for three months out of the year and the rest I take off.

Since the season is so short you need to make the most of it. If you’re just starting your business you need to get flyers printed up and sent out starting on November 1st. During my first year I got 1000 flyers printed up and I personally walked around and put them in mailboxes (I didn’t have any money). An important tip is to make sure that your flyer is flashy and is printed on good paper because that will get you more responses. My first flyer landed me 23 clients. If you didn’t get enough from the first send out do another one the following week and continue doing so until you have enough.

You’ll need to set up meetings with all of your potential clients where you discuss what they’d like as well as what it’s going to cost them. Remember that you need to quote for putting the lights up AND taking them down. Make sure that your client understands that they don’t need to take the lights down. There’s also an opportunity here to get more clients as well. Tell your client that for every person that they refer to you (who becomes a client) you’ll deduct 5% of the cost of their installation. That little trick more than doubled my business.

The most important thing to do during the quote is to get a deposit from your client. This can be anywhere from 25% to 50% of the total cost. For one, this ensures that they aren’t going to bail on you, but it also ensures that you have some cash to buy all you supplies.

Once you have all your clients quoted you now have a shopping list. Do not put off getting your supplies until the last minute because the store might have run out of stock on that item (it’s happened to me). Of course you’re going to need lights, but you’ll also need a ladder and some plastic clips. These clips make taking the lights down a lot easier. Plus, next year it will take you less time because the clips are already there.

Now that you have your clients and all the parts now comes the easy part. It’s time to put up the lights. Since each installation costs quite a bit of money it’s imperative that you make sure that your client is satisfied. Call them the next day and ask them if they’d like anything changed. If they want something changed try and get it done in a timely manner. After all, you’d like them to be your client next year as well.

In January it’s time to take down the lights. Call up your clients and schedule a time for you to take them down. Taking down lights is a lot faster than putting them up so you should be able to do it in two or three weeks.

That’s pretty much it! In your first season you can expect to make between $20K and $50K. Sit back and enjoy the rest of the year… I know I do.
