As a professional home security system consultant (and business security systems) I have gotten this question quite often. My first response is “there is a reason why almost all major insurance companies give such a large discount (some require it) when you have a monitored security system”. Most companies give even deeper discounts with added fire protection/monitoring.
Beyond personal belongings, what really kept me in protection services is I have saved lives. Here is a great example. I overcame a young lady’s objections on why she needs a system and she had one installed. Well, about 7 months later she called me and couldn’t thank me enough. As a matter of fact she was willing to pay anything to add more equipment throughout the entire house (all window sensors, glass break protection, etc…). The reason is, she was upstairs in the shower when her siren went off and she discovered her back door was kicked open. A few minutes later her neighbor told her she witnessed a man with a pistol in his hand running away from her house. We don’t want to imagine what may have happened if he wasn’t scared away from the siren!
Any homeowner’s chief concern should in the very least be to have a monitored system including burglary, hold-up and fire. Cost (most standard systems are less than $200 plus monthly monitoring fees) should not even be a question when it comes to helping protect your home and family. Better yet, with wireless technology and low installation costs, it’s now very easy to help protect your home and family.
Nobody wants to be violated. In most cases home security systems can act as a huge deterrent for loss prevention. Most people I meet with after a break in will not even go back into there house until they have a security system in place.
Is this a safe wiring install?
I’ve successfully installed my first home security system. I have wires going along the floor against the baseboard in one room because I couldn’t drill down because of a steal beam. These wires are for sirens. They go for about 60 feet. One wire has 30ma+, one has 30ma-, another has 1.2amps+, another 1.2amps -, and finally 12ma +, 12ma -. I took these wires which are all 18AWG and bound them together using cable ties. I had to extend some wires so I just spliced them and twisted the wire ends together and covered with electrical tape. All these currents are 12VDC. I put the wires along the baseboards and taped it down with scotch tape to the floor. This may be a silly question to some, but is this an ok instillation that wont cause any fire risk? I personally think it wont because the 18 gauge wire is good for up to 13amps but I’m a novice so just want to make sure.
Your OK. The only other thing i would do is solder the wires you had to extend, for a better contact.
