Ok, so you’ve bought your new projector and you’re excited to start watching movies, but did you remember to also buy some sort of projector mount? Projector mounts are one of the most overlooked accessories needed to use your projector effectively. Sure propping it up on the table with some books works for now, but a more permanent mounting system needs to be considered for the long term.

When considering projector mounts you have 3 main options available to you. In order of preference they are; ceiling mount, table top mount and wall mount. This article will talk about these different mounting options and the specifics of each. Also if you plan on using a one of the various ceiling projector mounts then make sure first that your projector has a ceiling mode on it that will flip the picture around and display it correctly.

There are also high tech projector mounts that will mount your projector flush and hidden in your ceiling or wall and then will extend itself on a motorized track when you want to watch a movie or use the projector. And then when you are finished the projector will retract back in the ceiling or wall. This is not a cheap option, but it is very cool and if your budget can afford it, then why not go for it.

Ceiling Mounted Projector

A ceiling mount is by far the most popular of the available projector mounts. A few of the things you need to take into consideration when looking at ceiling installation are; the weight of the projector, projector size, will ceiling fans or hanging light fixtures be in the way, will it take away from your homes décor?

Tabletop Mounted Projector

As far as projector mounts go a table top mount is certainly the easiest to install, however there are a number of things to consider. Is the projector in a high traffic area where it can easily become damaged? Can the projector adjust to allow the picture to display properly on the screen? Will the noise from the projector running interfere with your movie? Do you have kids who could burn themselves on a hot projector?

Wall Mounted Projector

Projector mounts in a wall setting are typically mounted in a corner of the room up near the ceiling and above average head height. Some things to consider about wall mounts are: Does the projector have an unobstructed view of the screen? Is the projector mounted high enough so as not to be a hazard for people’s heads? Can your wall mount handle the weight of your chosen projector?

How do i make a faux stone wall for a prop???

I have decided to re-do my son’s room in a caveman/dinosaur theme and want some special features in it, including a “rock” border around the windows and doors like shown in the pictures on the following link: http://www.thecompanystore.com/parent/Panels Shades/5221/GL15X/&An=102&A=5811 . I did look up how to make a faux wall online, but all the instructions i could find were to use the foam insulation you find at a home store, and i feel it may be too thin for my needs. If anyone has done anything like this for a theater/halloween decor/misc prop project, I would greatly appreciate a tutorial/list of materials.

They are correct you can 3-D stone work out of the insulation the you will find at your local Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc…. These pieces should be 4 foot by 8 foot by 3/4 inch thick. They are generally either blue or pink.

If you are looking for something thicker to add even more depth you can always use Liquid Nails adhesive to stick 2 or more pieces together to create what you believe to be appropriate depth dimension. You do not necessarily have to laminate in full sheets. If you only want to increased depths in certain places like around the windows and doors you can just double or triple up in those places. If you are laminating pieces together allow the Liquid nails to completly dry before moving on to the forming and shaping step.

Forming and shaping: this can be done with a heating element from a water heater attach to a stick. You can also acheive the shaping with a carving knife, a rasp, and fine grit sandpaper. The possibilites are endless but you should pick something that you are comfortable using and have worked with before. It is also a good idea to have a picture of what you are trying to create in front of you when doing this.

Also sometimes things that seem to be mistakes when they happen, turn out to be some of the best looking pieces of the project.

After sculpting the foam into the correct sizes and shapes you will want to preserve you work so it doesn’t flake and get destroyed easily. To do this you will want to coat the sculpted surface with something like cheese cloth that is dipped in a 1/2 and 1/2 watery glue solution and lay the cloths over the stonework face and gently press the fabric into the cracks and crevices. It is advisable to put on two to three coats of the cheese cloth covering and allowing the previous coat to dry before attaching the next.
Note: you can also do this step with paper mache or anything that will allow you to form the overlaying material to the foam while wet but will harden to a protective shell when dry.

If you are looking to smooth out the netting look of the cheese cloth you can fill in the holes with a very thin layer of joint compond. If you are going to apply the joint compound you should use you hands instead of a spackle knife. Yes it is messy but you get better and faster results.

After everything is completely dry, paint as you see fit.Usually multiple shades (lighter and darker) and layers of the same base color applied with both brushed and sea sponges work to create a realistic effect.
