Recently I had been in a situation where I had to make a suggestion to a friend. He had a disagreement with his wife on lighting of the new home that they had purchased and were planning to move into. He thought that ceiling mounted lights were the best, and her opinion was biased towards installing pendant lighting fixtures.

Believe it or not, I did not find answering this question difficult at all. The reason is that not too long back I had spent my time on the same thoughts. I had evaluated the ins and outs of both the systems. And I had decided that a mix of the two is the best, with pendant light being the predominant one. Actually, my train of thoughts had led me to further believe that if one does not prefer to have a mix of the two types then hanging lighting would prove to be the better choice among the two.

Let me explain what made me think so. I had evaluated the question from four angles. And from each angle, it seems that installing pendant lighting fixture emerged to be a better idea compared to mounting the lights to the ceiling. The four angles were the following.

• Setting focus: Since you get to control the height of installation of the light fixture in lights that hang, you install the bottom of the light at lower heights at places that you need better intensity of light. That gives you a better focus in places such as study tables, kitchen islands and dining table tops. If you are a fan of pool, ceiling lighting is the last thing that you want given an option of pendant lighting.
• Controlling the light spread: By adjusting the height of installation, you not only control the brightness and focus of the light. You also get to control how far the light will spread out. If you want the light to spread out further, all that you have to do is install the light higher up. There is no way that you can control this using ceiling mounted lighting.
• Beauty factor: Pendant lighting fixtures as well as the pendants and shades are beautiful. Let’s accept it – with the number and variety of designs that are available today, ceiling lighting simply can not hope to match pendants.
• Cleaning and maintaining: Since pendant lighting fixtures hang lower, it is easy to physically reach them. Hence any nightmare of cleaning and maintenance is taken care of to a good extent with the hanging pendant lights.

So the net result is that my friend was convinced and his wife was happy when I suggested them to install pendant lighting fixtures and explained why. And it was yet another case where the woman got her way beating her man!
