Do you have two switches, one for the lights and one for the fan? It sounds like you did not connect the wire from the switch to the fan. If you have seperate switches, the supply probably comes to the light switch and then a jumper is installed from the supply side of that switch to the fan switch. Check that out.. Maybe you just pulled the chain switch on the fan and turned it off? The fan motor did not go bad just setting there and since you did work in the box where the switches are……….There is where the problem is. One other thing, be sure that the jumper from the light switch to the fan switch is on the supply side. If you have it on the wrong terminal the fan will work when the lights are on but not indepenently.
