Ceiling fan lights are a great combination to have in your home and in any room in your house. There are some homes that have lights installed into the ceiling but not the fan. Learn how to install the ceiling fan so that you have a way in which to cool down the room during the summer months without running the AC all day long.

Preparation

Before you begin you need to do a few things to make sure that the room is ready to be worked on. Make sure that you do the installation during the daytime so that you can use the sunlight to see. You have to turn the power off so that you don’t electrocute yourself. Lock out the panel box so that no one turns it on while you are working on it.

You need to follow the directions that come with the ceiling fan. They can be different based upon who made them. However, in most cases the way in which they are mounted is the same.

The blades of the fan need to be seven feet from the floor in order to offer the best efficiency. Around the fan there should be 24″ around the blades so that there is nothing blocking it. You will need to replace the outlet box with one that is specifically used for ceiling fan lights. This will help them to support the weight of the fan as it moves.

You need to secure the new box to the brace it comes with in between the ceiling joists. You might need to access this through the attic or you can install an expandable metal fan hanger bar that can be situated through the attic or ceiling. Secure the box on to the bracket using a U-bolt. For most people they find it easier to use a ceiling fan light kit – which makes this easier and comes with everything you will need.

Before attempting to hang a ceiling fan make sure that the overhead fixture is ‘fan-rated’. In other words you need to know whether or not it will support the mass of a fan.

When you know for sure it will handle a fan then begin installation. First turn off the power to the overhead fixture. Since there is a red wire coming out, are there any other wires there? You probably have a white wire, a green or bare copper wire and a black wire. If this is a relatively new house or had a competent electrician it may already be wired for a ceiling fan.

Since you say that a dimmer may control the fixture you will have to remove this as you must NEVER operate ceiling fans with dimmers, you can only operate lights this way.
