Look at the fan. Does it wobble at all when it’s on? If so, it needs to be balanced. Better fans have a balance adjustment. Did your dad use a metal junction box and hang it from joists? Fans are heavy. The metal junction (electrical) box it hangs from MUST be attached to joists (structure). Not doing this is a code violation. You cannot suspend it from a section of plywood. It must be attached to the structure (joists/framing). Check the wires in the junction box. Are all wires twisted together properly (white to white, black to black, neutral to neutral and to the ground screw on the metal box)? The white and black wires must have plastic connectors on them. Did your dad use the proper gauge wire? If for example 12-2 wire is what is in your home/apartment walls and he connected your fan to the existing 12-2 wire using 14-2 wire, this is a code violation and fire hazard. You can never use smaller gauge wire than the existing wire you’re making a connection to. The humming sound can therefore either be from vibration from the fan being out of balance, not attached to rigid structure, or electricity going from a larger gauge wire to a smaller gauge wire(12-2 flowing to 14-2 for example), which is a violation.
