Coolest thing I’ve made using household items.

Well, in all fairness, and much to my chagrin, it’s got to be the pop bottle rocket.

Not the pump up with water rubbish. this is the proper stuff which’ll blow your hand off if you get it wrong.

okay:

2 litre soda bottle, (minus the soda, pour some out for your friends and relatives)

1 bottle methylated spirit. (nail polish remover or acetone will work, but not quite so well)

something to make a hole in plastic

a box of matches (preferably the long sort)

maybe a bicycle pump too.

right, you need to get some oxygen into that bottle. That’s what the bicycle pump is for. Pump some air in there, squish it and expand it, get some air in there!

Make a hole in the lid, about 1/4″ diameter (4mm).

pour a tablespoon of meths into the bottle.
Put the lid on it and shake the meths around inside it to get a good vapour.

Okay, now you’re gonna have to be careful about where this thing goes. If you lay it flat on the floor it could shoot off pretty much anywhere. For the first stab, it’s probably best to have the bottle standing upright.

Put your safety goggles on, (oh, did I omit to mention these… hahahaha).
Light your match.
play the match across the hole in the lid of the bottle.

If you’re having trouble attaining ignition, try applying a little pressure to the side of the bottle whilst playing the flame across the lid’s aperture.

Good luck.

Please note that any subsequent ignitions will require the clearing of exhaust gasses from previous ignitions. (hence the bicycle pump).

Also please note that any vessels larger than about 2 litres, particularly those not designed to withstand high pressures, are likely to explode if subjected to such treatment as this. (Just think: the larger the vessel, the more energy it has to offer. Lots of uncontrolled energy = a violent explosion).
