Planted Tank/Betta Dilema?

I have a twenty gallon tank that I want to put two divider in and put 3 bettas, with a heater and filter. I also want to have the tank densely planted, but I am absolutely oblivious when it comes to plants. I know they need CO2….but how do I get that high enough in the water? Should I add supplements? Should I have a layer of substrate underneath the gravel? My tank does not have a lid and I don’t think they even MAKE one for a twenty *long* I know they need a light…I’m not that oblivious, but how would I provide the plants with the appropriate level of light they need? I have a lamp that I can hang over the tank, will that work? The tank will also get partial afternoon sun from a west facing window (about 2 hours each day)
That being said, what types of plants should I get to put in with my betas? They do like frill plants, bamboo I know is good, any other ideas? Something I can put along the border to help them not see each other 24/7 would be good.

First off, bamboo plants are not really ‘under water’ plants. They like it deansly wet, so they may make it awhile in your tank but will eventually die. There are actually quite a few plants that petstores sell that are not true aquatic plants.

Your going to have to do a lot of research!

Substrate: your going to need a good substrate. I use flourite. It’s a little bit expensive, about $25 for a bag which would do your tank fine. This substrate is wonderful, I recomend it over any other. You can mix it with other regular gravel, just make sure the gravel rocks arent too big or it will eventually be bad for the plants. Make sure to rinse rinse rinse! It may cause the aquarium to be cloudy for a few days but after that it’ll not cause any problems.

Lighting: go to your local fish store. T-5′s are the best IMO to use. You can get a nice one for under $50 or so. They will give you good light. You can also use regular compact flourasent bulbs that they sell everywhere, like at walmart. You going to need good lighting if you want any high light plants. Some plants are low light plants that’ll do fine with a regular fixture and regular bulb. You dont want your aquarium getting direct sunlight! This is a big no-no. And yes, they do make lids/tops for 20 Longs.

c02: you can do it yourself (diy) or go to the petstore and buy one. If you do buy one from the petstore, look up the recipe for the diy c02 systems (the yeast, baking soda, sugar amounts) and just do that part yourself. It saves a lot of money in the long run. They sell the packets for the kits, but they cost about $7 or so, when you can just go to the grocery store and buy the stuff and do it yourself.

As for supplements, there are many ‘flourish’ available. But if you use the flourite you shouldnt have to add anything. I never have had to.

Some plants that are good and pretty easy; ludwigia, java fern, amazon swords, ancharis (sp?), and some anuibus plants.
