A vase is an interesting accessory. They can be beautiful and finely crafted on their own, but they are made to accommodate another item, namely some sort of flower, plant, or decorative facsimile. In this way the vase on its own is often only half of the soul of the piece.

Some vases are fine standing on their own. Glass vases that are placed in front of a window can cast an attractive light on a room. Vases can also be placed on a mantel, or in a centerpiece, to act as austere watchers over the room.

However any of these applications can be enhanced through the use of a second item. In the case of the glass vases placed before a mirror on a sunny day; this effect can be enhanced by pouring water at varying heights into the vases. This has the effect of creating different optical effects through the use of light and refraction. You can even use different colored waters to make a really interesting effect.

Flowers are probably the most common accompaniment to a vase. Smaller bud vases are sized to hold a single flower, while larger ones are designed for use with whole bouquets. The height and depth of the hole will determine the types of flowers that you can use in any given vase.

The problem with flowers is that they tend to get old and die. They also have to be kept watered on a pretty regular basis. Because of this some people get artificial flowers so their vase wont look so lonely. Other people fill their vases with strands of incense, or large wooden leaves.

Sometimes it is attractive to group vases together in decorative arrangements. You can have a row of vases all in the same color and size, or alternate, creating trailing lines going from tallest to shortest. You can also get creative with color, contrasting various tones one off of another.

With some vases made from natural materials, the vase itself may have unique patterns or colors in the surface. This is particularly true of hardwood, or various marble vases.

The vase is a piece that is a dichotomy unto itself. It is made to contain a centerpiece of some sort, such as plants or flowers, however you also want the vase itself to look good.

Please give me decorating ideas for a very old home.?

I recently moved to an older home. Most of the house is in orginial condition. The rooms still have the glass door knobs and beaded board walls and ceilings. I have one small closet underneath the stairs. Upstairs is a sitting room. Downstairs is 2 bedrooms (both 12 X 12), 1 large bath (it was converted from a bedroom. It is 12 X 15. It is between the bedrooms),the kitchen, dining room and living room (12 X 15) . I am not allowed to make any structural changes, I may paint and build moveable objects. Nothing can be attached to the orginial walls. I have no idea what colors to use. I thought about a Tuscany Kitchen, but I don’t know where to start. I want to keep the living room like a parlor, but have no idea what colors. The bathroom was redone in the ’70′s or ’80′s. All the fixtures are white and the wall paper is stained and peeling off. My king size bed fills up on of the bedrooms. Therefore, I must use the other bedroom for a closet. I thought about building a portable closet.

As for storage, find an old armoir which works well as a closet. Old chests and dressers can also be used to store folded clothes. Utilize closet space by hanging a second rod, halfway down from the one that’s there. Use over-the-door hangers in the bathroom and bedroom doors to store small items and shoes. Use flat boxes for under bed storage.

Since your bathroom is so large, you can add furniture there also. A vanity with a mirror is a great piece, can be used to do your hair and make-up, and can be used to store items. Scrape and/or tear the wallpaper off, apply 2 coats of Kilz primer, then paint the walls any color you choose.

If you know the year your house was built, you can research to see what the colors of the day were, and easily copy the original design.

My house is 86 years old, but luckilly, when I moved in, it was already done to my tastes. I hope you’re as happy with your results!
