Caring for an indoor herb garden can be a relatively simple thing to do so long as you have a basic knowledge of gardening. You must realize that caring for a garden, any garden, requires much more than sunlight and the occasional watering. Knowing the obligation that you are entering into when you decide to start growing an herb garden will be helpful as you start to learn more about caring for that herb garden.

The first thing that you need to know as you begin caring for your indoor herb garden is that the indoor environment can be quite a shock to plants. Keep in mind that most plants are accustomed to cool nights, breezes, rain, and direct sunlight. The transition from an outdoor environment to an indoor environment can easily be enough to shock and even kill your plants. The name of the transition from outdoors to indoor that must take place is called the “hardening off” process.

If you are planning on turning an outdoor herb garden into an indoor herb garden you will need to know about this process. You start by setting the plants out of direct sun for about a week. This gets them used to lower light conditions, conditions that they will have when they are indoors. After a few days, bring the plants inside for a few hours, then return them outside. Repeat this process for about a week, allowing the plants to be inside for a little longer each day. What you are doing is gradually introducing the interior environment to the plant so that the plant has time to adjust.

Once you have your herb garden inside it is important to identify any threats to the well being of those herbs. For example, if you have other houseplants and those other houseplants have insects, the insects could find their way to your herb plants and destroy them. Finding the right location for your indoor herb garden is also important if you have children or pets. The last thing that you want is to have done all the work of planting, moving and getting your herbs ready to be indoors just to have a pot knocked over by a child or a cat.

Herbs also need a good amount of light during the day. At the very least, your herb garden needs six hours of direct sunlight each day. If you cannot provide adequate lighting conditions (which is very common in winter months when the sun is simply not out for as long), visit a nursery and find special indoor gardening lights that you can use to provide the herbs with the additional light that they need. It is also good to be aware of the specific needs that each of your herbs may have. For example, herbs generally have poorer air circulation than other plants, so planting herbs too closely together could be problematic.

You also want to make sure that your herbs are getting enough water. Giving them a mist of water at least three times a day, as well as making sure that they are receiving their regular watering should be enough to keep them healthy during dry winter months. In regards to regular watering, as a general rule you should water most herbs thoroughly when the soil surface starts drying out. You should use water that is room temperature when watering your herbs. You should also let marjoram, oregano, sage, bay, and thyme dry out between watering but you should not let rosemary dry out. Some herbs (such as lemon balm, mint, and scented geraniums) enjoy moister conditions than most other herbs.
