New ceiling fan was working, then stopped working–now working again?

We installed a new ceiling fan last year where an existing one was. We used the existing wire that was there–and had no problem following instructions with hooking it up. It worked great for about 3 months. Then suddenly it stopped working about six months ago. Today my husband was sitting in the living room and he said it all of the sudden turned on. It and the light function of it are working properly (we are able to turn it off and on normally, and it’s speed is normal). Why would it do that? We thought originally it had shorted out–and were waiting until we could afford an electrician. Could a short fix it’s self like that?

I would check the connections inside of the fan before contacting an electrician. Chances are that the connections inside of the wire nuts vibrated loose and aren’t getting a good connection. It is easy enough to do yourself and only takes an hour tops. I would turn off all power to the fan. Get a tall step ladder and get comfortable. Remove two of the holding screws located at the base of the fan. loosen the remaining two screws and be very careful not to drop them as they are very tiny. Twist the base a little bit to free the base from the ceiling, hang the base from hook onto any of the solid screw holes and this will free up both of your hands to check the connections. Once the connections are checked and secured, reverse the process and you are back in the comfort zone! You don’t even have to remove the blades! Good luck.
