1. Wheel barrows; hold you child’s legs up and straight and they can walk around the house/garden on their hands. Initially it might be very hard so only do it for a short time. Let your child down to rest and try again. As time progresses your child will be able to do more and more. Once they get better you can leave balls or toys around to walk to and pick up. They can put each item they pick up into a bucket or box. Do not strain your child’s back. Make sure their back is not concaving. They need to lift up their bottom so they are protecting their back.

2. Using light weights (1-2kg max) your child can do arm curls. Hold the weights down by the side fingers facing forward. Keep elbows by the side and slowly lift weights up and then slowly bring them down. This should be slowly and in control. The faster it is done the more likelihood of hurting themselves and there is no benefit by doing it fast. Do this 8-15 times depending on your child and 3 repetitions. As your child gets stronger you can increase the amount.

3. Using the weights again. Hold weights with elbows bent by your shoulders, with fingers facing in towards their face. Lift arms up above head until arms are straight and back down to shoulder position. Do 8-15 times and 2 x repetitions. Again, increase as child gets stronger and make sure this is down slowly and in control.

4. Using a whiteboard marker or non permanent marker draw on a mirror or glass window/door. Make a lying down ’8′. “

This exercise is called “Lazy Eights”. Then draw a straight line above and below the 8. The child has to follow the 8 around and around making sure to touch the top and bottom line so that 8 stays in the correct formation. It needs to be drawn large enough so that your child can comfortably move their arm around. It also needs to be at the height of your child’s arm when they are standing up and putting arm out straight. Do this in both directions and try with non writing arm too. A fun way to do this is to use shaving cream on an outside window or wall. They can then clean it up using a cloth moving arms in a circular motion….also good for arm strengthening.

5. Using a Swiss Ball (any brand) approx size 50-65cm. The child lies on floor. Hands bent by their side for support, head and chest is up. Legs bending so knees come towards face. Feet are flexed. Adult throws ball at child’s feet. Child then pushes ball away using legs and both feet evenly and adult catches ball. This is lots of fun and great for the stomach muscles. Try to do 15-25 of these. Increase as child gets stronger.

6. Using a swiss ball again. Child lies on stomach on top of ball. Parent holds legs out and straight. Child then lifts top half of body upwards with arms straight up above head. The child holds this position for as long as possible holding stomach muscles tight. After about 20 seconds or so child releases down but adult keeps legs up. Child lifts up again. Do this 4-6 times and increase as child gets stronger. This is great for stomach and back muscles.

These are fun, great, safe exercises that you can do on a daily basis. They are fun and you will see a difference in your child’s strength if you are consistently doing the exercises. Remember choose 3 to do each day and rotate them. The best way to do it is to do 2 stomach and 1 arm exercise each day. If your child complains of sore tummy muscles…that means they are getting stronger. It is OK to give a rest over the weekend or if life is busy at least attempt to do them 3-4 times a week.
