An architectural lighting fixture is any fixture used inside of a building, whether commercial or domestic. It can also be used with outside lighting – such as in fountains or in parks – but it is generally used to describe any type of lighting fixture that is used in a building or architect project of any sort. Planning architectural lighting is in itself an art, as it must be set up a certain way.

It is not as simple as screwing in a light bulb or installing lamps. The lights must go with the general ambiance of the building. For example, in a church, you will not find neon lights or bright florescent bulbs in such a somber environment. You’re more likely to find sconces, candles and other soft lighting that can be manipulated easily. At the same time, you won’t find sconces in a mall or retail store. The atmosphere needs to be brightly lit and welcoming so that consumers can examine the products and prices.

Track lighting is a popular choice. Track lighting usually uses LED (light emitting diode) lights These lights have made leaps and bounds since being brought on the market in the 1960′s; residential and commercial buildings are finding use for them. You’ll hardly find a limited amount of lighting fixtures that support LED lights. Though they are mostly used outside – such as in parks – they are no stranger to being used indoors either. In fact, someone you know may very well have LED lighting in their living room or even their kitchen.

Under-cabinet lighting is also becoming popular in homes in the kitchen. These are lights that are fixed below kitchen wall cabinets. With these installed, it’s hardly necessary to have blinding lights on the ceiling and walls. Most of the time these under-cabinet lighting fixture is coupled with other lights that are fixed to an island or just over the sink.

Emergency lighting is also an architectural fixture option, though one people hardly consider. But it is important; if the lights go out in a store, office building or even your home, the exits need to be illuminated for the occupants safety.
