Even Kitchens that are wiped down daily can accumulate a build-up of grease and grime and require occasional deep cleans. The main product you will need is an effective de-greasing solution. Professional alkaline based degreasers will emulsify oil and grease with ease; however there are some good products on the domestic market that work quite effectively.

Always start with a tidy kitchen; put food items away, put away the washing up and remove any ornaments or other decorative items from the area. The logical way to tackle a kitchen clean is from top to bottom so to avoid contaminating clean surfaces and to bear in mind that once grease is loosened it will run and drip.

Using a stepladder to access high level areas; remove cobwebs with a lambs-wool duster. It is a good idea to remove surface dust and debris from all areas before any de-greasing takes place as it will in the long run mean less work. Take out crockery, cutlery, utensils and packaged food from cupboards and vacuum out cupboard units and drawers. This will get rid of those biscuit crumbs and rice grains that most of us find hiding under the cereal boxes.

If you have sticky pots and pans you can wash these using either hot-water and detergent or the de-greaser solution. It is advisable to check manufacturer’s guidelines and to test an area first as some products can strip the non-stick coatings off as well as tarnish some metals such as copper. Dusty glasses and crystal ware can be washed in a gentle detergent solution and air dried. Any sticky bottles or jars should also be washed, and all clean items should be stored away from the kitchen.

Take down greasy and dusty curtains or blinds, which can either be sent away for professional cleaning or can be tackled yourself. Aluminium or plastic Venetian blinds can be placed in a bath of hot water and detergent or biological washing powder and left to soak, rubbed with a soft cloth then hung back up to dry. Other washable decorative items such as wall plates can also be soaked in detergent.

Starting once again from the top; spray your de-greaser onto a cloth and wipe down the tops of the cupboards and any other high level fixtures and fittings including ceiling fans and light fittings. The de-greaser should break down grease which can be wiped up with a soft cloth, and so you should not need to use anything abrasive.
