It seems all so monochromatic! Also placing such dark colour it can become depressing or at least boring after a short while. The eye needs colour at least some,and your mood changes according to that, as well as the image you are creating may affect as well; but also other colours may be affected if you need to change part of your furnishings later on, so don’t try to work on your current furnishings only.

It may be more enjoyable to add colour to blend those two rooms and break the monochrome. It may still remain in earth colours, you mentioned tan, perhaps expand that a little more and add some hue of deep but suitable orange (for lack of a better word), to bring some “sunlight and joy” into the room, or some shade of mild but deep hue of khaki with the tan. You may add these colours a little, in the kitchen to blend it in or also use some cushions or ornaments to blend further.

Paint shops supply you with test pots of colour, I would try the final colours you choose, on two large plaster boards and place them next to where you will eventually paint the walls, or simply some fabric to give you an idea. Some times an addition of another colour in drapes or shades, may add the image you want without going to such dramatic and expensive work before you regret such choice as you will have to live with it.

Colour affects the emotions and your mood alot!! You may not pay attention as to what may affect you and a dark room that you constantly live in, may do that.
If you change your mind and want to change it afterwards, it will take a lot of coats of undercoat to cover the dark before you change the colour again!

Finally, if you are thinking of selling later on, just think how the buyers would like it and how it may affect the sale!!
Some decoration magazines if you browse a little may provide some ideas, but your type of house and overall decoration may be different to the result you are looking in the magazine.
