How often do you walk into a home’s bathroom only to find it inadequately lit? There’s a shadow at the mirror, and you actually appear worse for wear because the only good light is coming down from the middle of the ceiling. Placing at least two in a six-foot area will spread the light more evenly and prevent shadows. Other recessed lighting can be added to accent architectural features, such as a glass tile that will dazzle in the right light.

Sconces to either side of the vanity mirror assist in eliminating shadows on the face, and are ideal when placed 36″ to 40″ apart to each side. The center of the fixture will land at about eye level, creating a nice illumination for make up or shaving.

The overhead lighting in a bathroom can be a more decorative fixture, with the trend leaning towards chandeliers. Because of the decadent nature of the spa-like bathroom, it is no wonder the use of dramatic fixtures is more popular. Gone are the staid brass or white flush mounts – colored crystals, rich finishes, and ornate shapes create a mood the minute you occupy the room. Matching vanity lights, semi-flush mounts, and sconces are used in conjunction with this flashier fixture for maximum impact.

Just like any other room, having the fixtures on dimmers adds functionality and versatility. Dimmers also save energy and are easy to install regardless if the space is new or remodeled.

Using the proper light bulbs are crucial to the success of the bathroom fixtures. Halogen and incandescent are most popular for their clarity and color of light. Some of the new compact fluorescents are being lauded for their softness in color, but beware that most can not be dimmed.

Typically one has their floors refinished every 5 or 6 years. This is really the only way to get rid of the scuffs. It is also said to increase the life of the floor.

I personally am not a fan of hardwoods since recommended cleaning is done with water only. Woods contract and expand and in time you will see a black area at the seams. This indicates a mold problem. Due to my sons allergies I have spoken with MANY allergists and have found that hardwood floors are a trigger for allergies and asthma. Carpet by far is better. If you think about it one uses a dust mop on the hardwood. What does that do? It stirs up dust mites and pet dander throwing it back into the air. Carpet on the other hand get vacuumed daily, removing the dust mites and pet dander.
