Do light bulbs in lamps get looser?

…every few months, I have to tighten the light bulbs in my lamps. If I forget, eventually, they get so loose that they stop lighting up. I’m the only one living in my place. How are they loosening themselves? Vibrations from traffic?

Dunno. But I’ll take some swings at it…

I notice that ceiling fan bulbs are always getting loose – in that case, it’s probably vibration.
In the rest – probably not much of a factor…

It could be from expansion and contraction due to heating and cooling of the bulb and its socket when it’s turned on and off.

If it’s mounted base up (bulb points down towards floor),
and cools and contracts, gravity combined with the contraction from cooling could be working a job on it.

My primary guess is that the socket where the bulb is screwed into is a bit over-sized, undersized, or worn so that it doesn’t fit as well as it should.

Make sure in any case, that the bulbs you get are desiged to be used in that orientation.
Some are only mean to be used base up or base down, and will be labeled as such.

It they are not tight however, they can also (in certain rare circumstance) “weld” themselves in place.
This can occurs if there is a tiny gap between the base of the bulb and the socket, or corrosion on either making it hard to get a good connection.

In either case, the electricity has to jump a microscopic distance – like a miniature lightning bolt, or force its way past the the resistance of corrosion which generates heat.

Eventually it’ll usually get to a spot where the electricity can get through OK, because by then, it’s made a path around the corrosion or across the gap. But due to minuscule arcing, the light bulb may be stuck.

The only way to be sure (and I’m interested in the answer too!) would be to note which bulb you had to tighten and when. It might narrow it down to a certain socket, fixture, or brand, wattage or type of lightbulbs.
