So you found an authentic Tiffany Lamp that has been damaged? Or you’re just curious as to how a broken colored-glass lamp can be re-made into a beautiful new creation? Then you are in the right place.

Knowing how Tiffany lamps were originally constructed by Louis Comfort Tiffany is the first step in learning how to restore one. Much like a fashion designer or architect, Tiffany would sketch a design on paper, and then develop a pattern based off of the original sketch.

Once the pattern was completed, Tiffany would create a mold to etch the pattern onto and he would build a brass ring that would sit at the base of the mold. This brass ring provided the base support for the completed Tiffany lamp, as well as bearing the “TIFFANY STUDIOS” trademark. Tiffany would then cut out all of the pattern pieces and divide them into color categories. Upon hand-crafting perfectly colored pieces of glass, Tiffany would go to work cutting out each individual piece of glass.

As Tiffany cut the pieces of glass he would match them to the pattern on the mold to ensure proper fit. Temporary glue or beeswax was used to hold the cut glass onto the mold. Then Tiffany would cut strips of copper foil out that were approximately ¼ inch wide. After Tiffany had thoroughly cleaned each piece of glass, he would mold the copper foil strips around the edges of each piece of glass then place back onto the mold.

Beginning at the top of the mold, Tiffany would add another brass ring, and then solder each individual row working his way to the bottom. The end product was a stained glass lamp shade that was one solid weld. Using this Copper Foil Method, Tiffany was able to create strong, durable lampshades.

After removing the lampshade from the mold, Tiffany would attach the hardware and electric fixtures, creating a finished Tiffany Lamp. How does knowing this help in the restoration process? Let me explain.

Take a Tiffany lamp that has been found with an entire side broken out of it, the brass rings have been bent and pieces of solder are falling out. We will begin by re-creating a pattern for the Tiffany lamp, if you’re lucky, you can order or find a pattern online. Next, you will most likely need a mold of some sort. Mold options include purchasing one or making one out of silicone or clay.

Etch your pattern onto the mold, and then disassemble the lamp piece by piece, making sure to keep each row together in containers. Chances are there will be some broken pieces that will not be able to be used in their original rows, put these pieces into their own container – they may be able to be cut down to fill smaller rows. In order to replace missing pieces, you will have to purchase colored glass that matches the pieces as closely as possible.

Once all pieces have been cut, clean each piece thoroughly with warm water, very mild soap and a cotton wash rag. After the pieces have dried they are ready for the copper foil strips to be applied. Today you can purchase pre-cut copper foil to save a little time and effort. So the copper foil is wrapped neatly around each piece of glass and the glass has been returned to the mold in its proper spot. Time to solder! Place the small brass ring at the top then solder around each individual piece of glass ensuring a continuous weld that begins at the top and weaves its way to the bottom.

Your first mistake was using Behr paint. There is a reason Professional painters don’t use it. It is overpriced garbage. Go to a real paint store not a box store.

Ok your problem. If you want to tone down the bright yellow. Get some pure white paint and add it to the yellow. It will be the exact same color family with a more muted tone. Just make sure your sheen is the same with both paints or it will flash on you.

The contrast should be very attractive with the softer yellow. Just mix it thoroughly.
