In Tiffany’s booklet entitled “Tiffany Studios” published in 1900, the major theme was craftsmanship of “enduring worth.” Tiffany had a vision for his lamps that went beyond his time. And, these objects were to have qualities that were to make them valuable and timeless works of art. Tiffany’s vision for his lamps was that they “possess beauty and originality independent of passing fashion. As in the many admirable pieces of work which have come down to us from former times…doing service for a third or fourth generation of owners.”

Tiffany’s vision was realized to a great extent in his Tiffany lamps. His craftsmen were allowed to select their own glass, and for any given model the results for each lamp were unique. Today, this has led to some examples being supremely prized above the others for their “beauty and originality.” And, they have indeed been objects of enduring worth.

The life of a Tiffany lamp was intended to have three stages as described in the 1901 Tiffany Studios booklet, and a 1914 Town and Country advertisement. First, they should be one of the “select gifts…as embodied in a Tiffany lamp.” second, an heirloom passed on to “third and fourth generation of owners.” Finally they would be one of the needed, “antiques to meet our requirements.” However, Tiffany could not have envisioned the strange road that would become.

By 1909 the boom cycle of Tiffany lamps slowed down drastically. The 1910 price list indicated that hundreds of Tiffany lamps had been dropped from the 1906 list, along with cuts from most other Tiffany merchandise. Prices of remaining lamps were discounted up to half. The company’s great expansion after the turn of the century had reversed itself almost as quickly as it had begun.

By 1913, Tiffany’s price list showed a conservative approach to its product designs as well. Tiffany expanded home furnishings and decorations and used older historical designs. Tiffany lamps were affected, and some newer models departed from the natural designs in favor of geometric patterns. These changes reflected the fickle public’s new taste, in this case a trend away from daring innovation, back to historical traditions.

The national trend toward historical veneration in the arts was reflected at the design exhibitions of the time as well. Tiffany’s design of the favrile fabrique imitation silk shades and resurgence of the favrile glass shades over the floral were a result of the new tastes in decorative fashion. Metal lamps became a popular, though mass produced item and suited the cleaner lines demanded by the new Modernist school.

By 1920 Louis Comfort Tiffany had withdrawn from day-to-day operations of the company, endowed his stock to young artists, and commissioned his memoirs. The leaded glass department was finally closed in 1924, and for thirty years the lamps were fashionably unfashionable. It was not until two museum exhibits included Tiffany Lamps in the late fifties, that their “enduring worth” was again recognized-setting off a craze of collecting, investing, and auctioning that Tiffany surely anticipated.
