Also consider Nikon D40 / D60

SLR cameras require a significant investment to get started. To do what you say you want to do (portraiture and landscapes) you will need the at least the following:

Camera + lenses + memory card(s)
Tripod
Additional lighting for portraiture (lamps or flashes)
Carrying case/bag

The kit lens with an SLR does have the focal length zoom range required for most portrait and landscape shots; but you will probably want to get at least one or two more lenses for the camera.

Depending on your budget (if you have less than $700 USD+taxes to spend), you may also want to consider something like a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ28 or a Canon PowerShot G10. They are both great cameras with all the manual controls that are available on an SLR, for a fraction of the price.
