Question regarding betta fish tank size?

I’ve had a 3 inch (or so) long betta fish for a little over a month now. I keep him in a 1/2 gallon tank (it was all I could afford at the time) with a soft green plant in the center.
My question is: I’m hearing a lot about tank size when it comes to bettas. The girl at the store I bought it from said not to go too big — they like to control their environment, and if the tank is too big they get scared and hide all the time. Now, I’m reading the opposite. My fish is very, very active. He darts around the tank, up and down, in the plant and out and is generally very happy, eats well and all. He also loves it when I turn on the white lava lamp that I have next to his tank, he swims near it and stares at it. I’ve also -NEVER- seen him flare up his gills at me, seen him blow a few bubbles once or twice, but that’s it. Is it possible that he’s happy where he is?
Bigger tank or what? I’m not sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions?

The smallest tank i have ever kept a Betta in is 46 gallon.

Theres not much difference in price between a 5 and 10 gallon so your better off getting a 10 as it will be much less work for you and better water quality for him.

If he’s active he will love a 10 as there is a bit of roomfor him to dart around and gives you the option of a few additional fish if you want.

Give him a cave to hang out in and some plants to sleep in and he will be happy as stink.

There is some truth to males in larger tanks as they sometimes feel obligated to patrol there ground which causes them stress a little with all the activity.

I prefer females, there more energetic and i feel have more personality and you can have several of them together but the males are nice too.

hang a small mirror off the side of the tank for a few hours at a time.

Flaring doesn’t stress them either so if he likes seeing himself in the mirror (he thinks its another male) and constantly flares..
