are ten 100w led lights equivalent in light to a 1000w led light bulb?

i’m building a light for my mother’s home and it seems like an obvious question to answer but i can’t wrap my head around the fact that a 1000 watt light costs 1000 dollars, while 10 lights would be much much cheaper and work just as well?

The efficiency of a light is not related to its wattage. Some lights are much more efficient than others.

For example, in incandescent light is only about 5-10% efficient, meaning it wastes nore than 90% of the energy supplied to it as heat, and not as light.

The most efficient form of light normal people can get their hands on is an led (light emitting diode), and their efficiency is more than twice that of incandescent bulbs of any sort (see attached article.)

Most efficient are sodium vapor and flourscent. Again, see the article.

Generally, LEDs do not add, linearly. The larger ones cost more to manufacture per lumen of output (the growth of a larger cyrstal is required.)

I guess my question is what difference does it make if you use indirect lighting over most of the house, and difusers for local lights, like reading lamps (LEDs are rather directional, you know.)

The cost of LEDs is cheaper over the life of the source, but LEDs can be “strained” by surges, etc.

Go with the smaller sources, and diffuse the output – they will last longer, and be cheaper.
