Jlf definitely has the right idea…You need to ask two or three reputable contractors to come to your house and give you an estimate. And by reputable I mean, ask around your friends, coworkers and family and see who they’ve used for remodels. If nobody you know has done any major remodels, ask the contractors to supply names and phone numbers, and possibly addresses so that you can see what he’s done, and talk to the clients to see if they are happy with his work. Happy or not, most past clients will be more then happy to sing his praises, or be his downfall!! And make sure he’s licensed and insured. My husband and I learned this the hard way about getting references and such…we hired a “contractor” to remodel our entire upstairs (which cost about 25,000 grand all said and done, extensive remodels are never cheap), his work was half-@$$ and he wouldn’t even bother to show up somedays. I should have fired him the first day!! Anyways, shop around, you need to have faith in your contractor. There’s a LOT of money on the line being sunk into your largest investment, so he has to be good!! Good luck!!
