What kind of hood/canopy/lighting should I use for my aquarium?

I recently purchased a 55 gallon aquarium that did not come with a lid. We are planning on having a freshwater, planted setup. (Easy plants…java moss, java fern, etc. We’re new to planted aquariums.)

While I really don’t have much experience with this, I can say you can buy whatever you want and spend as much money as you want to on it !!!! But, do you really need a fancy setup for simple plants? The reason people buy flourescent light fixtures at Home Depot is just to save money. They usually build a wood frame around it to support and for asthetic purposes. If your just using flourescent bulbs, then the fixture is not not important. If I were you, then I would buy a good glass hood and a cheaper fixture and build a wood flame to cover it. If you don’t want to do that then I would buy a light fixture made for aquariums. That way it would look good and you won’t have to do a lot of work. For simple plants, I don’t think that yopu would really need the built in lighting canopy.
