Leopard Gecko Lighting?

Ok, we got my son his first lizard. We bought a kit at Petsmart that had everything in it (carpet, house,bowls, lights, tank). My question is, the lights (one a bright light and one a black uv light) fixtures get super hot and it worries me to leave the bright light on all day while were not home or at night with it in my sons room. Is it safe electrical wise?? Am i supposed to leave the brighter light on all day and then the black uv light at night. Or the other way around?? We’ve had the gecko for 2 days and it just stays in it’s house. I moved the house this morning to make sure it was still alive and it crawled around for a few minutes & then back inside. I put a waxworm in there and it disappeard so Im not sure if it got eaten or if it wiggled somewhere and I cant see it. Should I get some crickets today and see if it eats?? Please any suggestions would be great!!!

I suggest you keep him in a 10 gallon tank with repti carpet as a substrate. Also have variuos hides. You should leave the bright light on all day and the black uv light at night. Since they are cold blooded they cant produce their own heat so you must provide a heat source. During the day I put on my Zoo Med Day Light Blue Reptile Bulb. I got it at the prt store for 7$ they come in 60-100 watts. As far as feeding, you should grt crickets and put 1-3 in the cage every night. You should always have a small bowl of mealworms in the cage to eat when ever he wants. You should also always have a samall bowl of calcium with D3 at all times in the cage so tour leo will lick it as it needs. I use Zoo Meds Repitive with all hte calcium, minerals and vitamins it needs.
