You are inspired by the latest technology where everyone is talking about going “green”. Companies and manufacturers everywhere are going “green” with products that has low energy consumption and carbon emissions, yet you feel that going “green” seems like an elite thing to do.

This may be due to the fact that high taxes challenge the affordability of hybrid cars, new computers that supports low energy consumption does not help users with complex software uses (even some Facebook games demand a lot of your computer’s processing powers) and “green” advocates almost always seems like a bunch of odd people who lived with a lot of trees in their gardens that will use up the many pots of compost that they accumulate each week.

Whether you are caught up with the green movement or not, some practices can still be adopted at your home, even if it is just for economical reasons. Here, we have a list of practices and tips which you may employ to your home for a start.

a. Change your light bulbs

Many people will tell you to switch off all electricity if you are not using them. However, that is still not enough. Our human eye needs lights for reading and it is also not healthy to have lights turned off while you are concentrating on the television, even if it is a horror movie. Replacing traditional light bulbs with low-energy consumption bulbs could mean energy savings of up to 75% your normal usage. Replacing your bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs, for example, will let you experience the drastic drop of a 60-watt traditional bulb to a 15-watt compact fluorescent bulb for the same light and feel.

b. Keep your home well ventilated.

This means to allow natural air to move around your house, from one window to another, from one room to another. Maybe you got the hint, but if you don’t, it means that you should turn off the air conditioner and open the windows instead. This works well especially for high-rise apartments where the breezy wind will sweep through your home and keep it cool. You will also be delighted at the end of the month when electricity bills halve or drop by more than 70% after you turn off the air conditioner.

c. Car lovers – wipe your car with a damp cloth often to lessen car wash.

Many people may bring their car for a wash every week and wax every few months. However, you can reduce the hassle and waste of a car wash if you take care of your car everyday with some simple tasks. Start by using a damp cloth to wipe your car’s body every day to get rid of whatever dust you might not like. There’s no need to wet the whole car with water to do this, you only need to dampen a cloth and do the wiping. Clear out the interior by opening all four doors and beating against your car seat every other day just as you will beat the cushion on your home sofa. That will untrap any dirt. Get rid of the sand on your mat by pouring them on grass area or something rather than into the drain. This daily practice will help maintain the cleanliness of your car so that you will need maybe one car wash a month.

d. This is our personal favorite: Cooking instant noodles with less water.

The instructions on the packet always say, boil water until it’s bubbling, then add in the noodles and then the flavoring. If you would like to save water, time and energy, do what we always do. We use only half the amount of water recommended on the packet, throw in all ingredients with the noodles, and then heat up the water with all ingredients intact. By the time the water boils and bubbles are bursting with loud pops, everything is cooked and ready to be served.

e. Eat the lazy man’s way.

Not really that lazy after all. For this, you need to walk instead of taking the car to the nearest eatery. Be lazy to explore further than your neighborhood when you wish to buy something or have a quick dinner. However, be diligent and light on your feetto get the meal or the item. Walk to the shop. Walk back. Do not bring your car keys with you. You save money on petrol, you save the environment with no carbon emissions, and you save money on your health as you get that 15 to 20 minutes exercise.

When you operate fluorescent bulbs at a cold temperature upon initial start-up, either CFLs or the long tubes, they require comparable energy to their incandescent counterparts. You also wear out these bulbs faster by doing so.

Fluorescent bulbs are best when operated in steady state, where steady state light is desired. It is best to place CFLs where you will be operating them for at least an hour’s usage at a time.

You are better off installing incandescent bulbs in bathrooms, since they go through higher frequency operation cycles.
