Tucked between the Irish Sea and the River Derwent, the name of Workington – Cumbria gives a strong clue to its stories past as an industrial, shipping and market center.
Parts of Workington north of the Derwent have been dated back to Roman times in Britain. Queen Elizabeth I granted the Lord of the Manor a charter in 1573 to operate a market centered on corn, potatoes, turnips, oats, and cattle. Fishing also remained a mainstay of the Workington economy until the 17th century.
Beginning in 1650, the developing coal trade and the advent of the Industrial Revolution changed Workington into a vital center of iron and steel manufacture. The area offered both multiple seams of coal along with high quality hematite (iron) ore. Workington’s natural resources undoubtedly drew inventor Henry Bessemer to introduce his revolutionary steel process there. The Bessemer Converter proved so pivotal to Workington’s history that it’s now immortalized in the town’s center in floral and topiary sculptures. Steel making ended in Workington in August 2006.
Workington has been home to several distinctive churches. These include the parish church of St. Michael’s dating to the 7th century, and St. John’s Church, built in 1823 of sandstone from local quarries and resembling St. Paul’s Church in London.
Today a major attraction of Workington is the Helena Thompson Museum, bequeathed in 1940 to the townspeople by a local philanthropist, Miss Helena Thompson. The museum serves as the archive of Workington’s industrial and social history, along with impressive displays of furniture, pottery, glass and silver dating from the Georgian era.
Another attraction popular with visitors is Workington Hall, dating from the 14th century. Once owned by the Curwen family, Lords of the Manor of Workington to whom Queen Elizabeth I granted that important market charter, the Hall sheltered Mary, Queen of Scots on her final escape from Scotland.
The most lasting tribute to Workington’s steel making past can be found on just about any train line in the United Kingdom, where the town’s name is branded into the steel rails.
