12V halogen downlights will give a bright white light, use a good quality 50W globe and electronic transformer, check that your transformer is dimmable (its always a good idea to put lighting on a dimmer)
Spacing- to get, even general light spacing is 1m in from the wall and each light 1.5 to 2m apart.
There are different types of downlight fittings, a stock standard fixed fitting is good in most applications, use a gimbal/tilt fitting if you have raked ceilings or want to focus the light on artwork/structural feature etc. An antiglare fitting is a good idea if you have a lot of windows or a wall mounted tv.
How high are your ceilings? Anything over 11-12ft you would have to adjust the downlight spacing.
