Is tritium safe?

This can be a complicated topic. Alone, tritium is a fairly stable and harmless substance. Just being in the presence of tritium poses no health hazards. However, the radioactive nature of tritium makes it a genuine hazard when inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through skin contact. These health hazards make special handling necessary when removing damaged products powered by tritium.

Why are tritium exit signs so common?

A step forward from basic plug-in and battery-operated lighting, tritium offered a energy-neutral option. Tritium exit signs found their way into many late 20th century office buildings and schools. They removed the need for exit sign replacement parts such as fuses and light bulbs, making them appealing to cost-conscious developers.

Are tritium exit signs environmentally friendly?

While their reduced power use may rank these signs above electric signage, the additional measures required for disposal of tritium exit signs drops them down a notch. Given the dangers of inhalant and skin contact with the luminous gas, it must be treated as a hazardous material when removed from a building. Careful inspection and specialized maintenance and disposal are necessary to prevent any possible risk to building occupants. Licensed hazardous waste handlers can minimize the danger of tritium seepage into groundwater systems.

Are there other options in exit signs?

Photoluminescent exit signs have risen to popularity in standard building design.
