When Oil painting how important it is to use the correct tone of a color?
I am following some oil painting lessons on DVD and color required are listed. I'm not just copying pictures but its use for ideas and design. I have 2 different sets of student grade oils, but none of them are black indicates midnight. I have black carbon black and ivory. I also have 3 different greens, but not one of those in the lesson. Does it matter? I'm a little confused as to why they are so specific in the shade. I understand why it is good to have several greens, yellows, blues and reds, but how different are the blacks? Could anyone tell me particularly, for which I use different blacks that I might be able to decide whether to buy specifically the lack one
You need the primary colors: red, yellow, blue - whiter. In theory, you can make all the colors in the spectrum of these three colors (the target will be clarified and / or flatten out). A quality basic palette would cadmium and lemon yellow, cadmium red, alizarin crimson (ideal for skin tones), cerulean and ultramarine blue, and Viridian green earth, yellow ocher (also good in skin tones), burnt and raw umber, burnt and raw sienna and titanium white. It can be done a beautiful blend of black burnt sienna with ultramarine blue, much more vibrant and alive than any black you can buy in a tube! Adding white to the mixture produces a range full of gray, but you can make "gray" for each color using their respects (eg Viridian alizarin crimson and green). And do not forget: are copied images is a very good exercise when you are first starting to paint. Enjoy!
