My parents both grew up in what I like to call the ‘frontier of America’. It’s hard to believe that in the middle of the 20th Century there were places still like that but if you look closely they’re not too hard to find even today. We live in a very large country and even though most of us live within arms reach of our neighbors there are many people who may not see anyone for days or months. These are people who know that you need to be prepared for many things and that even if you have electricity you need to be prepared for it to go out.

Tucked away on a shelf we had several very nice, oil lamps of etched glass. These had heavy bases and tall chimneys and thick wicks and were kept full of oil so that when the power went out in our suburban home, as it did a few times a year when thunderstorms rolled through, we could still have light to eat peanut butter sandwiches and do homework by.

All oil lamps have the same basic construction – a container for the oil, a wick holder and a wick. How elaborate you make your oil lamp is up to you. A basic oil lamp can be constructed from found items in your kitchen. A leftover jelly jar, stiff wire, and some cotton, along with vegetable or olive oil will make a serviceable oil lamp.

To make your own oil lamp lets start with the container. As long as the container has sides deep enough to hold the oil it will work. If you want to add a chimney to your oil lamp then you should probably buy your base and chimney together so that you know that they will fit properly. Any container from can to a jar or a glass will work as an oil lamp is one of the most basic homemade candles.

Next take your wire and wrap it around a twig or chopstick or thin pencil to make a coil. The wick can be anything made of cotton – a piece of dishrag, threading from a mop, the hem of a t-shirt – well, you get the picture. Thread the wick through the wire coil so that it stands up about ¼ inch higher than the top of the coil. Place the coil in the container and fill with oil to about an 1/8 inch below the top of the coil.

There’s the basic oil lamp construction and now that you understand how they are made you can decide how you want to elaborate on it for yourself. Do you want a more elaborate container? Do you want colored oil? A fancier wick – well, more fancy than the hem of a t-shirt surely- can easily be found at the craft supply store or online. Perhaps you even want to decorate the containers with glass paint or other items.

Oil lamps are just one more type of home candle making and another way that we can pass along this enjoyment to friends and family. This would also be a great project for kids. So many great ideas from one oil lamp project! Don’t forget that the only thing that limits us much of the time is our imagination and now that you know the basics you can go anywhere for here!
