There’s no shortage of Disney Princesses to inspire a little girl’s custom theme bedroom. Acting like Genie of the Lamp for Aladdin?

I’m in this theater play based on Aladdin and i have some funny lines in it like “It makes me sound like a used carpet dealer.” and “Your wish is my command kiddo.”
Any advice on how i should play this character. I thought about being full of myself, but i don’t know. And help with Facial expressions too?

I have a month until the performances. And I’m a 14-year-old girl.

Genie of the Lamp? Congratulations that’s a good part

I don’t see the Genie as being full of him/herself. For me my full enjoyment of the film didn’t start until the Genie/Robin Williams came on. That character made that film.

I’d read the script over a few times, to get a good understanding of who the Genie is, how the Genie helps others and how the Genie drives the story forward.

Then have fun with it. That’s exactly what Robin Williams did and that’s why we all loved that movie. He tried out hundreds of different ways of delivering those lines, some were scripted, some were completely improvised, some were work shopped.

I see the Genie as a lovable clown. He entertains, he makes magic happen, though he really does care about those around him – in this way he is not arrogant.

I think a good way to get in the mindset of the Genie would be to view everyone you act with in the story, Jasmine, Aladdin, Sultan even Jafar and Iago as family members. He has a close relationship with all of them. Jasmine’s like a sweet sister, Aladdin’s like a naughty brother, Sultan’s like a cute old dad, Jafar and Iago are like uncles that no one really likes to see but they’re part of the family all the same.

A month is plenty of time. Memorize the lines as soon as possible, that way you can concentrate on having fun, being your character and interacting with the other characters rather than stressing yourself out with “what’s my line?!”

In the end just have a joyous time have fun with the other characters, play with pace, expression and really drive the story home for the audience.
