Paint and furniture give your space its overall look, but it’s your accents and accessories that really give the space personality. Without these decorative additions, your redecorated space will look as sterile as a hotel room or magazine picture – not inviting at all. So you’ll want to use your unique style and personality to infuse the room with character. When you add appropriate decor items and accents, you’ll create a space that looks great, feels lived-in, and reflects who you and your family really are!

Adding accents is quite possibly the easiest and most fun part of decorating-it’s probably the least expensive, too! The previous articles in the in this series have already introduced my two rules of thumb when it comes to decorative accessories: purpose and style. You’ve already defined these two characteristics of your room-and you need to stick with them! No cheating now that you’ve come this far. Stay on the same path when it comes to accents and your room will look and feel logical, comfortable, and lovely…

Think about it, if you’re creating a traditional sitting room, chances are chicken-themed statuettes probably won’t fit in nor will any other kitschy animal theme. On the other hand, an ornate urn lamp, a collection of filigree crosses, or a scrolled fire screen are all appropriate accents. Do allow your personality to shine through in the accessories you select, but make sure the items you pick actually suit the room to avoid a mishmash look.

Other than transgressions of style, perhaps the most common problem when it comes to accents is simply amount. Less is more! Do NOT cover every available surface with knick-knacks, art, or other items unless you want your home to look like a curio shop. Accents should be just that, small details that help finish out your room’s aesthetic style and functional purpose. In fact, some of the best decorating accents are practical items like lamps, candlesticks, clocks, and end tables. By choosing items that coordinate with and enhance the overall look and function of the space, you’ll add utility and style.

Of course, not every decor accessory needs to be practical. Feel free to (conservatively!) add whimsical, purely decorative, or ornamental items to your room. Just be sure to limit them so that you don’t overfill your space. One great idea is to use a single eye-catching accent to create a focal point-this enables you to really express your personality without going overboard on trinkets. Some of my favorites include an oversized clock (a great fanciful addition to an office) and decorative wall screens (perfect for more traditional spaces). Or you can group several similar items together into a themed collection to make a big statement without cluttering up the space. You could try several colorful vases in a children’s rec room (make sure they’re out of reach of clumsy fingers!), decorative baskets (great for extra storage, too), or any other moderate-sized item. Just don’t let it get out of hand: you’ll want to limit your collection to a few items in a confined section of the room-if you scatter themed accents throughout a space, it tends to become contrived and a tad tasteless…

When it comes to decorative accents, the moral of the story is be yourself. It’s your room and your house and you’re the one who has to live there – so make sure it’s your personality and character that get expressed, not the style choices of some catalog company or interior decorator. Whether you’re grouping decorative souvenirs collected from a lifetime of traveling or purchasing new items to fill out the function (lamps!) and look (accents, artwork, etc.) of your newly redecorated room, make sure that it feels right to you. Go with your gut, stick with the function of the room, and keep your style consistent and your newly redecorated room will look like a million bucks-without anywhere near the price tag! Enjoy!
