There is really a town in Indiana called Santa Claus, and at Christmas time its’ post office postmarks approximately 10,000 letters from children and 500,000 holiday cards. But, grownups no longer send letters to Santa Claus because, we say our childlike innocence evaporated years ago. By the age of 8, only 25% of kids believe in Santa as they begin to question why Santa can visit every home in one night, can squeeze his round body down a narrow chimney, and is seen in umpteen million shopping malls across the country at the same time.

As early as the fall of 1897, when she was beginning to ask hard questions, an 8-year old girl, named Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the New York Sun asking if Santa Claus really exists. An editorial writer named Francis Church replied, “Yes, Virginia” – the classic example we still hear today.

Virginia may have bought into the fable. However, by the age of 8, most Americans have admitted to the harsh realities of life. Have we abandoned the enchanting figure of our youth?

In spite of the early reality check, the fictitious story of a magical, mythical holiday figure still leaves adults with a sentimental attachment.
