Every week we work with our home owners, and future home owners, as we assist them in their journey to complete everything from a yard gazebo to a 5,000 square foot log home. Anyone who has ever built knows that lighting is a key element to a home’s atmosphere and functionality.

But looking outdoors, lighting is key as well. Porch sitting, deck relaxing, and gazebo dreaming are things we all like to enjoy in the late evenings. When the shadows are stretching longer an outside chandelier can make those quiet evenings linger…

So what choices are available? Are all chandeliers alike? Can you use and interior rated light for exterior use when it is on a screened in porch? Do outdoor chandeliers come in different motifs?

The choices abound in exterior hanging light fixtures. From antler to mission style, floral shaped globes to lanterns, there is just about every style available.

For safety, only an exterior chandelier should be used on covered porch or in a gazebo. With powerful winds, snow and rain can travel much further than usual. So utilizing an exterior approved light is wise.

Sun rooms are another good place to hang a light that is UL approved for wet/damp locations. Many times it is overlooked, but a hot tub or excessive plant vegetation in a sun room can increase humidity dramatically and result in damage to a standard chandelier.

Chandeliers can come in just one light up to 15 lights or more. Many have a three light arrangement. Also they can come with square shades or glass globes. I have even seen some which feature flower shapes and metal leaves intertwined for more elegance.
