How do I change an outdoor light fixture?

Please tell what I need to know about changing an outdoor light fixture (like one by your front door that is attached to your house). This fixture is old and needs to be replaced badly. Do I need to know about electrical in order to change it? Should I hire a professional?

This isn’t too hard to do.

The first thing you must do is turn power off to the light fixture. To do this, have someone near teh breaker box or fuse box, and have the light on. Have them pull fuses out, or turn breakers off one by one, and yell at them when the light goes off.

Just turning a switch off, there can be some current inside and this way all juice is dead.

The next thing you will need is probably a step ladder, a pair f wire strippers, some anti oxidiating gel, needle nose pliars, and a screw driver. You may want to invest into some silicone / caulk too. Also, wire nuts, which are usually provided with teh light fixture and some electrical tape woudl be helpful.

This anti oxidating gel is very important, especially if you are connecting wires together of different metals. Biggest one, aluminum to copper. If you do not do this, over time, one of the metals will corrode and there will be no solid connection.

Ok, as the power is now off to this fixture, you should see where to take the screws off, to get the light fixture off.

Depending if you have ground wire or not, there will be 2 or 3 wires coming from the existing fixture, and inside the new fixture again will be 2 or 3 wires.

If there is a green wire, or a wire that is bare with no insillation, this is the ground wire. Tie these together, and you can wrap them around a screw that is on a metal bar, that goes across the diameter of the hole. If there is no ground wire, skip this step.

The next two wires are the most important. All white white wires, should be connected together. This is the neutral connection. All black wires should connect, this is your hot wire. Wire nut them, and put some electrical tape around it to keep any moisture from getting side.

Once you are done fasten the light fixutre back to the wall, and seal the edges with caulk or silicone.

Then put in a light bulb. Turn on breakers or fuses and you should be good to go.
