Many homeowners are reluctant to use fluorescent bulbs in their homes because they fear the mercury that is contained in these bulbs. While there is mercury in these bulbs, it is simply not dangerous unless it breaks and shatters. Even if the bulb breaks or shatters, it is still not dangerous unless you do not clean it up quickly and properly. In fact, using fluorescent bulbs (including the convenient CFL bulbs- compact fluorescent bulbs) has more benefits than dangers such as being super energy efficient compared to the old conventional incandescent light bulbs.

Here is the bottom line: If a fluorescent bulb is broken it can emit mercury vapors and cause poisoning- over a period of time. That is to say, as stated above, if you clean it up properly and quickly there is really no danger. Further, the mercury in one bulb is not even enough to cause harm since it spreads throughout the room overtime.

To safely and efficiently clean up a fluorescent bulb break, simply follow the steps below:

Don’t allow children or pregnant women into the area.

Open the window to allow air flow into the room to allow for the mercury vapor to dissipate.

DO NOT vacuum up the mess, instead, sweep up the glass and phosphor powder.

Wipe the area with a damp paper towel since it helps to pick up the stray glass and the particles and then place all of it, including the paper towel, into a plastic bag.

Then take it to your local hazardous waste collection center.

Note: You should take all of your old fluorescent bulbs to a recycle center.
