There is nothing I think is better than arriving home after a long day at work and heading for the deck to relax, wind down, and enjoy a favorite beverage while the dog and I gaze out upon the garden. Luckily for me, my wife insisted that we cover the deck and provide an array of deck lighting to help us get more enjoyment from our investment even during the evening hours. While most any home will have a light on the back porch, this is far from an adequate design if you intend to utilize your deck for outdoor parties during night time hours.

We are known to do some entertaining and much prefer to do it in the great outdoors. We have a nice large back yard and it is perfect for having people come and share their evenings with us. While I was not entirely on board with the huge covered deck my wife envisioned when we moved to our new home, once it was built, it only took a couple of relaxing evenings before I knew that she had hit upon a great idea. While the design and construction of the deck was pretty straight forward, when it came to the deck lighting it took a little more thought and research.

The first thing we did was consider all the different function areas of the deck and tried to determine the type lighting each would need. My first thought was the cooking and food prep area and I knew it would require the brightest lighting on the deck. To accommodate this area we chose to install recessed lighting in the ceiling. We also decided to place this type lighting throughout the entire ceiling and place the lights on dimmers so we could easily control the amount of deck lighting at any given time. This was decided upon rather quickly, however, the other lighting was a bit more difficult for us to agree on.

Since lighting was part of the overall design of the deck, it was easy to incorporate some recessed embedded lights in the posts, rails, and even the floor of the deck. These lights provide the perfect amount of illumination and ambiance if the gathering turns into a dance party. Since our gatherings often extend into our back yard, we also had to consider lighting other than deck lighting and most of this was accomplished by utilizing low voltage path lighting that allows people to move between the different areas of our yard safely and without the fear of taking a tumble on some unseen obstacle. Along with some spotlights and rope lighting to highlight some special features such as the waterfall and garden area, this lighting serves to make the rear of our home quite the wonderful place to see.

As I mentioned earlier, most of this was the brain child of my wife and she has done a wonderful job. The deck lighting and other lighting around our property provides a great place to just get away from the normal hustle and bustle of everyday life when hitting the road for a vacation is not possible. If, like us, you would like to make the exterior of your home an oasis you can enjoy any time, day or night, do a little research and even drive around the area and see how others use exterior lighting and I am sure you will hit upon a scheme that makes you as happy with your back yard as we are with ours.
