If you like the look and ambiance created by recessed lighting, then you probably should take a long look at halo recessed lighting, which are recessed lights that are placed in small niches in a ceiling.

They are great for rooms where you want the lighting to be as unobtrusive as possible, and when they are combined with other forms of lighting, the effect can be even more dramatic. They can have the same effect as accent lighting, because they can be used to help make a certain object in a room stand out in a subtle way, such as a fine painting or sculpture.

There are several types of halo recessed lighting for you to consider, and they each have a different effect. Reflector lighting gives the light more of a glaring effect. Lens lighting has a covering over it, which helps to minimize the glare.

Open lighting means that the bulb is uncovered to achieve maximum brightness, and baffled lighting has a ribbed covering that helps to reduce glare, and eyeball lighting is adjustable and can shine the light in many different directions. As you can imagine, each type will have a different effect, so you will need to see each one before you know for sure which one is right for your room.

Like with any recessed lighting, the proper placement of halo recessed lighting is of utmost importance. If you are using it to illuminate a specific object, a good rule of thumb is to place the light about 24 inches from the wall, assuming an eight-foot-high-ceiling.

This would be increased or decreased proportionately, depending on whether your ceiling is higher or lower than eight feet. Also, the lights should be placed so that the beams overlap by 40 percent to ensure the best coverage. Any more of an overlap will cancel out the effect of each light.

And as stated earlier, halo recessed lighting should not be used as the only lighting source in a room. For maximum effect, they should be layered with other types of lighting. And as with other types of recessed lighting, they are easy to install.
