Market share is the percentage of sales received by your product or service for a specific category. Small businesses can start to increase their market share by first focusing on the primary city or suburb. When you calculate market share you will come across direct, indirect and phantom competitors. Direct competitors are the businesses who offer the same product or service as yours to the same customer base. Indirect competitors are other business who offer a similar service, but which is not in their core business model.

For example, if you own a car rental service, there may be a motel in your town who offers free pickups and drop-offs to certain destinations. Phantom competition is unrelated events or businesses which can affect your business. For example, when a competing manufacturer announces new products, some consumers will hold their buying decision. As a business owner, you will have very little control over phantom competition.

Price is the most prominent element which a consumer may use to evaluate the quality of your product. With all things being equal, the consumer will often opt for the lowest priced alternative. Therefore you can research on equally valued competing products and set a lesser price.

Another way to increase the market share is to add value to your existing products. If you find that lowering the price is not viable, (due to the costs, legal contracts etc.) you can add value to the products while leaving the same price. The end result will be the customers will receive a better deal with your product compared to your competitors.
