Great Self Portrait Tips?

I love photography, but I often find I have no one to take pictures of, other than myself. I’d like some ideas on how to take a really GREAT self portrait. I’m an amateur photographer, and am only 14. I’d like some unique ideas, as well as some tips on lighting, and how to make the picture more self flattering, if possible

I have a Nikon D80, sorry I forgot to mention it.
Thanks for the great tips so far. I’ve done lots of outside shoots but have almost always used the sun and not shade.

You have not said what camera you are using. I am going to assume you have a pocket P&S.

1) Go outside, use natural light.
2) Pick a cloudy but sunny day. Clouds act as natural diffusers (no harsh shadows).
3) Position the camera on a sturdy surface or a tripod.
4) Set the camera on self timer 10/20 secs…
5) Take your photo.

They are cheap and do the job.

Just pose, and use the remote to focus and take the shot. Keep it in your hand and keep it obscured. You may need to point it directly at the camera but if you are doing head/shoulders shots then it will not be seen.

It’s just like standing behind the camera and pressing the shutter.

You MUST use a good tripod.
