Could you please help me with my new nikon d60? (LIGHTS SHOWING UP)?
I only got it a month ago and I’m still learning how to use it.
Im trying to get photography lessons.
But, this christmas, i still want to try and take photo’s.
when we put the tree up, i tried taking pictures,
but the lights on the tree don’t show up?
can you please tell me good settings that will make the scene more effective.
and settings for good family photo’s by the tree too.
(that will show the lights up )
please help.
Without seeing an image its difficult to tell how you went wrong & what you were trying to achieve (ie what did you want the image to look like).
However, overall I’d go with a longer exposure (you’ll need a tripod, or to brace the camera on something non-moving to reduce camera shake). Along with that you might want to use the self timer button so that any vibrations from you pressing the shutter button have time to die down before the shutter opens (with longer exposures, the slightest vibration can make it look burred).
If you want to get a shallow depth of field (this can look quite pretty with Xmas lights), you’ll need a wider aperture, but combining this with a longer exposure may lead to overexposed images.
Also, most Xmas tree lights tend to be incandescent, so you might want to experiment with the tungsten white balance setting.
For family photos near the tree, although I wouldn’t recommend on-camera flash I appreciate its all you’ve got, but try to use a setting like ‘slow synch’ – that way you’ll blend in a bit of the ambient (background) light for a more pleasing balance.
The great thing about digital is that you can experiment, see the results instantly & delete the ones you don’t like.
