An off-camera flash is almost a basic necessity if you use a digital SLR (DSLR). It provides a lot of creative freedom due to mobility, is much stronger than your on-camera flash, and improves your camera’s autofocus.

When I first bought my off-camera Olympus Flash, I started to realize that there were times when the strength of the flash would create too many shadows. For example, taking a portrait of someone standing next to a wall will result in shadows being cast on the wall, which may make their head larger, their noses crooked, etc.

Another major problem with the off-camera flash is that it can be really harsh on your subject, especially if you attempt to light up the entire room.

Although these problems can be dealt with by using techniques such as bouncing the flash or reducing it’s power, you will have much more control over your pictures if you use a flash diffuser.

Some off-camera flashes – such as my Olympus Flash FL-50 – come with their own diffusers, but using add-on elements such as the Sto-fen Omnibounce (some photographers also recommend the Gary Fong Diffusers) is a more professional path to go.

These flash diffusers immediately soften the light being emitted from your off-camera flash. By “diffusing” and spreading the light out, your images will have a much more natural look, without sacrificing flash power.

There are a couple of things you can do to your flash to emulate a flash diffuser, if you are not sure you are ready to invest in one (they usually cost more than 20$). You can tape some tissue to your flash. Although this isn’t ideal (the tissue will easily tear, and it isn’t as uniform as the diffuser), it will give you a feel for how diffusers can improve your pictures. You can also use an index card. If you position this card at around a 45 degree angle to your flash, you will be able to reflect the light in different directions.
