There has been a huge advancement in the design and production of humanoid robots today. In years past these bots were able to crawl or wheel around the place following its given command. Nowadays, with humanoid robots such as the Bioloid Comprehensive Kit actions such as walking and dancing are completely possible.

I chose to look into this Bioloid humanoid robot because it stood out from the rest for having such a vast array of different features available. This is not your standard everyday toy robot that is seen sitting in the shops gathering dust. This comprehensive kit allows you to build and program over twenty-six robots!

Any youngster interested in robots and building kits will benefit so much from this educational robot. First there is the design and building stage where all the parts have to be carefully assembled to produce the chosen robot. Then there is the programming process where you get to create the type of movements and functions you want the Bioloid to possess. There is no limit to what this robot can do.

A massive plus for this kit is the simplicity of the whole thing. Even someone with zero kit building skills and zero technological knowledge can put this Bioloid Comprehensive Kit together. You don’t need any skills whatsoever. Enclosed in the pack is a manual with very clear illustrations and easy step by step guide.

All the kit parts are labeled and listed clearly in the instruction manual. Any small fittings and pieces come in baggies to prevent loss and make things a little more organized for the builder.

There are different kinds of modular brackets in the pack that can be put together similar to a Lego set. The types of combinations available are limitless and if you ever find yourself stuck for ideas then the manual has a whole bunch of project options described.

Another great design feature are the servos. Unlike most, these do not have wires or chords hanging out of them which keep the robot neat and wire free. The digital servos are ID labeled and very strong able to withstand all kinds of knocks and bumps. The Bioloid Comprehensive Kit has advanced sensors which include a mic that can detect sound, light and distance. It will detect any light or distance that comes into its programmed range.

The kit comes with three pieces of software to be installed on a computer. There is the “Motion Editor” which helps create the robot motions of your choice. The “Behavior Control Programmer” which simply allows you to specify how the robot behaves. Lastly is the “Robot Terminal” software which isn’t a major necessity for fully enjoying the robot but its there if needed. It’s a more in depth look at what the robot is doing and how it all works.

Overall, this is a truly great kit for people of all ages and skills. The manual is very well documented and the parts are easy to put together thanks to the labeling system. Boredom is not an issue as there are a ton of projects to build and a limitless supply of graphical and animation options available making this a perfect gift for a creative youngster.

I have always used continuous lighting in my studio, any type even cheap tungsten halogen or fluorescent works a treat, with DSLR’s you can calibrate the white balance in camera so you no longer have to buy expensive photofloods.

I do have strobes and they are handy as shutter speed has little bearing on the exposure so camera shake isn’t a problem and you can work hand held, but continuous lighting enables you to see the results before you press the shutter not analyse your pictures after on a small screen. Throw enough light into the set and I can still work with shutter speeds of 1/250th of a second or faster.

It just goes to show how the method you were trained in is the method you tend to adopt throughout your career.
