If you are a pottery class instructor, odds are you have a highly frustrated group of young individuals on your hands. Working with clay can be a great release for some, but yet a great wave of irritation for others. When it comes to working with clay, one has to have quite a bit of patience when just starting out. Someone might get quite annoyed when they are sculpting something and their clay has sat too long and dried out. Or they might sculpt something wonderful, but they didn’t paint their liquid glazes on thick enough and the clay streaked through. A student might have begun a wonderful vase or bowl on the potter’s wheel only to cut it from the wheel and have it fired to realize that the clay was still way too thick. There are many things that can go wrong when it comes to teaching children how to work with clay, but now there is a solution to one of those problems.

When it comes to throwing clay on a potter’s wheel, there are a myriad of problems that anyone could face, let alone a child. One of the more difficult techniques to master is that of trying to locate the center of your clay. Finding the center of your clay means that you have a finished piece that is relatively even on all sides and isn’t the least bit lopsided. For most people, centering on the potter’s wheel is one of the harder things to accomplish. But now there is a centering tool that will ease all of your grade school woes. The centering device plunges down into your slab of clay, leaving you with a nice round piece of clay with the middle clearly marked. All you have to do is purchase one of these tools for your grade school pottery classes and watch the projects come flying from the potter’s wheels! Most of the grade school pottery teachers (or even college professors) have commented that they can’t believe that it took so long for someone to invent such a wonderful tool.

The simplist way to make pots, in terms of minimal equipment, is to push pieces of clay together and smooth them out. This can be tedious and sloppy and it is hard to make all those uneven joints tight.
So the next step is to take the pieces and roll them into uniform rods/coils which are wrapped around and around and then smoothed. Now the seams are horizontal and a force that makes one tighter does the same for the other.
If the piece is built on a stone, it is easy to move it while it is soft, so it can dry and harden.
If the stone is flat on top but has a boss (lump) one the bottom, then it is easy to turn to a new position to get at the work.
It is not much of a step to imagine that if the stone is mounted on an axle, it will be easier to turn and if another wheel is mounted on the bottom, then the feet can turn it, leaving the hands free to work.
Smoothing the coil constructed piece on a turning wheel, it doesn’t take much to recognize that a lump of clay might be worked up while spinning instead of rolling and adding all those coils.
A turning wheel almost automatically results in the thickness of the walls being uniform as long as the clay is uniform and the artist is practiced. The risks are that the clay can get too thin and not support its own weight.
