Carbide lamps are lamps that have historically been used by miners and spelunkers, as well as on vehicles, bicycles and even lighthouses. So why in the world would you want a Carbide lamp in your home? There may be more to it that you think. You don’t often imagine incorporating a Carbide lamp into the design of your living room or your bathroom, but there are actually a few unique designs that it may fit in nicely.

Because many Carbide lamps that you might find in a retail store today are typically antiques, they can make excellent additions to your home if you tend to collect antiques. They are no longer manufactured in the United States, which makes them not only unique, but also valuable. You probably should not purchase one with the intention of using it, as the Calcium Carbide may be hard to locate, as well as difficult to use. Unless you really know what you are doing, you may want to steer clear and leave the lamps for display only.

There are several different types of Carbide lamps that are common for antique collectors and dealers. The most common ones were at one time used for caving and mining. These stand up on their end and have a large reflector behind the bulb that projects out in front. The reflector helped miners see directly in front without being blinded by the light themselves. The interesting design this particular style of Carbide lamp has can make a very unique set of bookends. They may or may not be heavy enough to actually hold up the books, so you may want to use something else to do the work, and then place a carbide miner’s lamp on either side of the row.

The other very typical type of Carbide lamp is the type used for headlights on vehicles. These are also very interested to have amidst the rest of your antiques. Headlights on very early automobiles were large, round Carbide lamps that sat up on top of the hood, rather than today’s headlights that are part of the front end. These old fashioned headlights can be hung on the wall on either side of a photo or painting of a Model-T. If you work in your garage quite a bit and want to add some style to it, a wall of vintage license plates and a few Carbide lamp headlights will make visitors stop and stare for a minute. It might surprise you how creative you can be with an invention that you never imagined having in your home in the first place!
