A torchiere casts light upward … unless you plan on reading while hanging from the ceiling, that light won’t do you any good! A floor lamp can be positioned where it casts light down over your shoulder and onto your book.

For light bulbs, either a compact flourescent or daylight bulb will give you the best and cleanest light … the CF is, of course, more eco-friendly and costs more, but lasts much, much longer. Replacing standard light bulbs with CF bulbs can save you a LOT of money in the long run.

I do agree with you about the “soft white” and standard incandescent bulbs … I don’t like that yellow tone they give off.
