The use of large pieces of fabric or cloth to provide shade from the sun dates back to Egyptian times. The sail cloth of the time was rather heavy and inflexible but leant itself remarkably well to the duty of providing shade. In more recent times a new shade cloth fabric was developed, initially in Australia which was lighter and more flexible, but still provided a high degree of protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays. It was as recently as the 1990′s that shade cloth became available on a commercial scale and began to find acceptance in homes as an alternative to parasols, pergolas or gazebos.

There was initially some confusion as to what these new shade devices should be called, but the terms “shade sails” and “sail shades” and now used interchangeably and commonly throughout Australia, New Zealand and the USA. The new technology has been slower to gain acceptance in Europe, but the indications are that Spain and France will see a rapid growth in the adoption of shade sails as they become more widely known and available in the market place.

The recording artist Christopher Cross sang about it in the 1980s, “It’s not far down to paradise at least it’s not for me, and if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility, the canvas can do miracles just you wait and see.” What Christopher Cross was singing about was the naturally high that you can get by being out on the water somewhere in a sailboat. While you may not have a sailboat you can still enjoy the tranquility. Shade sails provide the illusion of being sailing out on the ocean, without leaving your back yard.

While the canvas he was talking about may be able to do miracles, these miracles can occur in your back yard also. You may have seen them in a neighbour’s yard or while traveling and wondered what exactly these odd looking things were. Well shade sails are a relatively new way of the creating shade out in your garden.

While you may not be able to just walk put your backyard into your garden and go sailing these sails might having you think you can. These shade devices are constructed in a manner very similar to a sailboats sail. These devices are made out of durable canvas or cloth and attached securely in at least three points to wires or rods.

While the sails that Cross sang about provided a way of gliding along the water, these sails provide a way of enjoying the outdoors and fresh air in the middle of the summer without having to be exposed to direct sunlight. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Regardless of the shape or size they are all designed to do the same thing provide large areas of shade.

Constructed out of durable fabric or canvas these devices are new to the retail market but the concept is far form a new idea. I fact this idea traces all the way back to the Romans and Greeks. There are some questions as to the validity of the belief that the Romans may have used this concept in the Coliseum.

While the purpose that you intend to use it for is probably not nearly that great these items will serve the same purpose, protect you and your loved ones from the sun and provide a cooler place to sit outside in the middle of the harsh summer sun. Your home is probably much more humble of a structure than the Roman Coliseum, but that does not mean that your need for shade is any less than it was for the Romans.

These devices are created to provide the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors without placing yourself or your family’s health at risk. While the human body requires a certain amount of sunlight to remain healthy, too much of it will make you ill, provide sunburn, sun poison, or eventfully lead to skin cancer. While sunscreen and lotions provide some measure of protection it is still not a good idea to enjoy the direct rays of the sun for extended periods of time.

There are several different manufacturers and suppliers of sun shades. While many of these products are of a similar quality there are a few different materials that these sails are available in. There are some versions of these products incorporate durable but inexpensive materials. In some cases these fabrics are knit material that is flexible and able to be tossed in this wind without being damaged.

There are other versions of these fabrics that are manufactured form heavy duty canvas. These canvas sails are actually constructed in a very similar manner to a sail used on a boat. There are also some products that re made from PVC. These heavier material sun sails are not typically moved by the wind and will provide a good source of shade.

These products also come in different shapes. The triangle shape is the most popular style but there are also shade sails that are available in square or rectangular shapes. You can arrange these different shapes to cover just about any are that you desire to provide shade in. If one sail is not enough to provide the protection that you are looking for, then you should consider using several sails hung at different angles, or place two triangular sails in opposing directions to provide a larger square area.

You can also have these shade sails treated with a product that will provide additional protection from the UV rays of the sun. This not only helps you but also is beneficial to the sail as well as it provides protection so that the condition of the sail will be better maintained even in direct sunlight. By using these sails you will find that the canvas can do miracles.
