This is the age of green revolution where many companies are ‘going green’ and being eco-friendly to save the planet. LED or light-emitting-diode is a semi-conductor light source and have been used for many years now; their earliest forms being indicators, traffic signals and calculators. This small light emitting diode has grown immensely is now set to become the dominant source of lighting in homes as well as offices. The earlier LEDs used to emit only low-intensity red lights but now various other types such as normal lighting, infra red and ultraviolet lighting are available with a high level of brightness. LEDs have traditionally been used only for decorative purposes, typically as small blinking lights of different colors. For general lighting purposes, colors won’t do, white light is what is required. Now, white LEDs that emit bright, natural light are commonplace. They also have higher energy efficiency than the common fluorescent tubes and other traditional light sources. If one is looking at being eco-friendly and saving on energy costs, then LED is the answer. It may initially cost more, but over the course of time it pays back for the initial investment and also continues to save on energy costs. LEDs reduce direct electrical consumption, and also reduce the amount of heat produced. This helps in lowering the general load and thereby increases energy savings.

Not only in offices, but LED lighting systems are also incorporated in normal households. The future of urban landscaping will be through LED lighting systems, this new lighting technology is all set to be the preferred lighting choice of the future. LEDs consume a very low level of energy to produce the same level of lighting as compared to other lighting sources. Studies show that there is considerable decrease in the carbon emissions as well. LED researchers have now entered even horticulture. Lighting technology that aid photosynthesis have been developed.

Growing of plants in controlled environment is also being studied – this will ensure that there is a good harvest regardless of the season or location or the use of pesticides. Imagine the possibility of having your own indoor kitchen garden where you grow luscious vegetable, herbs and all sorts of greens using LED lighting systems. Experiments are underway that will explore novel uses for LEDs. New products are being developed that will help the customer make good market evaluations on different lighting systems.
